Information On The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is very important in the Ethiopian culture. The coffee ceremony will be performed when friends visit, during celebrations, or simply as a part of the daily routine. It is so important to how the Ethiopians view coffee that most Ethiopian restaurants will have the coffee ceremony performed for you at your table.

The Ethiopian coffee ritual takes the participants through the entire coffee preparation process. Whether you are witnessing the ritual in a restaurant or lucky enough to participate in someone’s home, the green coffee beans will be brought to your table by a woman. She will wash the beans, and then start a fire in a small open roasting furnace.

The washed beans will be put into a small pan with a long handle and held over the fire. The woman preparing the beans will shake the pan back and forth, like an old-fashioned popcorn maker. This keeps the bean from burning. Some people have described the sound of the shaking beans as similar to shaking coins in a tin can. Once the beans are roasted, the preparer takes the pan and walks around the room, filling the room with the enticing aroma of freshly roasted coffee. Experiencing the sounds and smells is an important part of the ritual.

The next step in the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is to grind the freshly roasted beans. In restaurants, they may use an electric grinder to speed up the process. Traditionally, the beans will be ground in a small tool called a mukecha (pronounced moo-key-cha). The mukecha is a very heavy wooden bowl. The beans are poured inside, and then crushed with a zenezena, which is a wooden or metal stick that is used in an up and down motion, rather like a mortar and pestle.

The ground coffee is then put into a traditional clay pot called a jebena (pronounced jay-ben-ah). Water is added, and then the pot is put over heat until the coffee boils. The scent of the boiling coffee again fills the room, tempting the senses of all the participants of the ritual.

Coffee prepared in the Ethiopian coffee ritual is then served in small ceramic cups resembling the small cups you see in Chinese restaurants for tea. The cups are arranged on a tray very close together, and the coffee is poured from one cup to another in a single pour from the pot. This is a very important step, even if some sloshes onto the tray. If the server poured each cup individually, the coffee grounds would get mixed up with the liquid, resulting in gritty coffee. With the single pour method, the coffee remains free of the sediment.

Once you’ve taken your first sip, you’ve witnessed the full life-cycle of making coffee, from washing the raw beans, through roasting, grinding, and boiling the coffee. If you’re in a restaurant, the ceremony usually ends here. Traditionally, second and third servings are often prepared as well. Each serving has its own name: the first serving is called Abol, the second serving is called Huletegna, and the third serving is called Bereka. Once you’ve reached this stage, you have completed the Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

The coffee grinder is a wonderful tool to have as one of your kitchen appliances for a number of reasons including the fact that it provides fresh coffee, it provides a wonderful aroma to your kitchen, and it can help make your kitchen feel a little more homey. It is these benefits that make the coffee grinder a popular item in the small kitchen appliances section of the department store.

When you grind your own coffee beans, you can’t help but realize the freshness that is created when you take that first drink of coffee after brewing a fresh pot of coffee from those grounds. When you grind your own coffee beans, you are releasing the flavors that have been packed inside the bean since it began growing. This is how the great taste of coffee is achieved when the coffee is brewed.

Another great benefit of the coffee grinder is the aroma that is released when you grind your own coffee beans. Many don’t realize it but the aroma can be stronger than if you simply buy the grounds from the store. The reason for this fact is that the smells of the coffee have been locked inside the bean since it began growing and are stronger at the initial point of when the grinding takes place. So the result of the grinding process is not just fresh coffee grounds, but a wonderful aroma of fresh coffee that spreads throughout your kitchen and surrounding rooms.

When you walk into your kitchen, do you get the feeling of home or does it feel like just another room in the house? Coffee grinders can help you achieve this feeling by providing the aromas that you were used to smelling when you were a kid. They can help give a comforting feeling of being in your own safe environment and having the unique smells that are produced by cooking and other activities can reinforce this feeling.

When it comes to coffee grinders, there are many benefits that come along with these great little appliances that you can experience if you were to purchase one. Hopefully you’ve consider the idea of having this tool in your kitchen so you can enjoy the benefits for many years to come.

The History of Espresso Coffee Makers

]]>

Espresso coffee makers came into existence from man’s need for a faster cup of coffee. The espresso machines not only produced the coffee faster but also produced a better one. Initially in some machines they found some kinks to be worked out but the coffee maker inventors didn’t let little issues deter them.

Who invented the first espresso coffee machine?

Each record gives us different answers. Some record says, the first espresso coffee maker was invented by Louis Bernard Babaut in 1822 along with Edward Santais, who was the marketer of machine in 1843. It got the publicity in 1855 at the Universal Exposition in Paris.

According to the records, in an hour a coffee maker can produce one thousand cups of espresso coffee using steam to force water through coffee held in the filter. Every new invention has to bear risk and this espresso coffee maker was not an exception. It had a tendency to blow from time to time and sometimes it burned the coffee too.

The initial espresso coffee makers weren’t so easy to use. Operating them required some degree of skill and it left plenty of room for diversity. The intensity of the heat & the length of time were controlled by the operator and the water valve remained open. The coffee users could put in less coffee grounds & obtain strong coffee or use more water & get a diluted one.

Further records credit Luigi Bezzera, a manufacturer, with the invention of Espresso in 1903. Bezzera wanted to make coffee faster, so he added more pressure due to which ‘Voila’ the Fast Coffee Machine was born. This machine made coffee faster and better than any other machine. The machine invented by Bezzera used the force of steam to push water through a fixed filter containing coffee.

Even though Bezzera was skilled in inventing, he was lacking in the marketing talent to promote his creation. In 1905, Desidero Pavoni purchased the rights of the espresso machine and the product was successfully marketed, changing the way everyone drank coffee. The coffee makers were sold throughout Europe by Pavoni.

Franceso Illy created the first automatic espresso coffee maker. In 1935, Illeta invented the coffee maker and used compressed air instead of steam for his machine. The problem of exploding espresso coffee makers was solved by this machine & gave a more stable result.

The espresso coffee maker invented by Achille’s Gaggia bears his name in 1945. The lever action was included in his invention and even today we can get the modern versions of both Illeta and Gaggia espresso coffee makers. An electric rotating pump was created by Ernest Valente in 1950. The pump allowed a continuous, even flow of water through the coffee maker.

In 1970’s, Illy went on to simplify the espresso coffee maker process, when he introduced a machine that combined the best parts of previous espresso coffee maker methods. His machine used double filters, which costs less than other coffee makers and was simple to use.

Super automatic espresso coffee makers were born in the 70′s. Now they are the standard coffee makers in many countries. The machines continue to evolve. The debate over which methods and which machines produce the best espresso will be going on as long as people continue to enjoy their cup of Joe.

Why Join a Coffee of the Month Club?

Have you ever wondered why people join coffee of the month clubs? There are many benefits and types of coffee to be explored with these clubs. This article will give you some idea of what coffee of the month clubs are, where to look to find a club bested suited for your needs, and some of the benefits that are available when you join a coffee of the month club.

Brief History of Coffee

One of the first legends about coffee comes from around c850. It tells of a young goat herder in Ethiopia watching his goats eat red berries. Upon seeing the goats become friskier after eating these berries Kaldi of Ethiopia decides to try the berries. He feels much frisker after eating the berries. A monk sees this and takes some of the berries to a monastery to make a brew with the berries. Other monks drank the brew and are able to stay alert for their long devotional and prayer times. So begins the history of coffee. In 1475 the world’s first coffee shop opens in Constantinople. In 1995 it was estimated that 400 billions cups of coffee were consumed a yearly.

What are Coffee of the Month Clubs?

Today the coffee you can brew in your home can compare in taste to great coffee shops. Generally, coffee of the month clubs are a means of having a great tasting coffee delivered to your home through the mail each month. Not only is coffee offered but tea and other items are offered as well. Coffee of the month clubs will generally give something free to get you to try their great tasting coffee. The free item is not a gimmick just to get you to join the club but a means of letting these companies demonstrate their great tasting coffee and other products that they have to offer. Most of the coffee of the month clubs will send you coffee once a month after you have received your free gifts. Good coffee of the month clubs will usually let you cancel your membership whenever you want. You still keep the free gift in most cases. Now, think how many people will cancel after receiving their free gift. For coffee companies this is an expensive marketing tool. If they did not feel that their coffee was of a high enough quality they could not afford to give free items away.

Benefits of Joining a Coffee of the Month Club

Coffee of the month clubs provide individuals with great coffees every month without having to go to a crowded store to purchase a good coffee. Most coffee of the month clubs will have specials for each month that add to the value of belonging to their club. You can make coffee at home that will compare with what you receive at coffee shops any time that you want and at a great cost savings as well. Not only do you save on gas but you also save on the cost of this prepared coffee. This is especially helpful for people who want their special coffee every day. Think about these savings and what else you might purchase with the money you save. Most clubs will have information that is enjoyable to read and helpful in preparing that special coffee or tea. You can still get together with others for coffee in your home.

Finding a coffee of the club month that best suites your needs is not hard. The internet is a great way to look for a coffee of the month club. Read about the benefits that they offer and try one that you feel will work. Today coffee of the month clubs offer coffees in the caffeinated and decaffeinated flavors and blends. They may also offer teas and other items that can be found in coffee shops. What better way to have that special cup in the morning than in your robe curled up in a favorite chair?

The Great Benefits Of Using A Coffee Grinder

The coffee grinder has been helping people make fresh coffee for many years and will continue to do so for years to come. When you think about making coffee, do you also include the idea of first making your own coffee grounds from coffee beans that were purchased at the store? Chances are you have thought about doing so but just never really made the effort to try it for yourself. The truth is, coffee grinders are very beneficial for a number of reasons including cost efficiency and freshness.

One of the most important benefits that many are taking advantage of buy using coffee grinders is the fact that there is a potential to save a lot of money by grinding your own coffee beans instead of purchasing coffee grounds from the store. When you buy coffee grounds from the store, part of the price that you are paying includes the cost of having someone grind the beans for you in order to pack them into individual coffee ground packages. If you eliminate this process by grinding the beans yourself, you eliminate that extra cost. You will incur some cost on the front end when you purchase a coffee bean grinder, but you will recoup that cost after a short period of time. The savings provided by grinding your own beans can add up dramatically and will definitely help you out in the long run.

The other major benefit of grinding your own coffee beans is the high level of freshness that you are able to enjoy. When you buy coffee grounds from the grocery store, you are buying grounds that have been pre packed and stored on a shelf for sale. The problem exists because you have no control and no idea how long those grounds have been sitting on the shelf. Each day that goes by presents more opportunity for the freshness of the grounds to be lost. When coffee remains in the form of a bean, then there is little freshness lost because it is locked into that form. When you grind your own coffee beans, you are essentially releasing that freshness at that very moment, so you are achieving the maximum amount of freshness possible for your coffee.

When it comes to drinking coffee, what would you rather have, fresh coffee at a lower price, or not so fresh coffee at a more expensive price? The correct answer seems to be pretty obvious but the fact of the matter is that most people are more concerned about convenience rather than freshness. This is why buying grounds from the store rather than grinding your own coffee beans is more popular. If you’re looking for fresher coffee and are willing to put in a little extra effort to get it, then you will have no problem with the idea of grinding your own coffee beans. Plus, you’ll save money doing so which is always a great benefit.

Without a doubt, organic coffee has become one of the most recent developments in the world. And seeing that it is organic; means that we will get several health benefits when choosing it over the regular crop. But what makes this type of coffee different from the other types? What are the health benefits?

Because organic coffee has been grown without the use of chemicals and harmful pesticides, we can only guarantee that the coffee we drink is produced naturally. For this reason, it is full of antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients that can make our hearts healthier. The reason why organic coffee is full of antioxidants is mainly due to the fact that they are grown in soil which is rich in volcanic nutrients. And because these coffee plants are being grown under a shade, most of their nutrients have been preserved.

All organic coffee, no matter where it is grown, do not include the use pesticides and chemicals. For this reason, organic coffee does not produce any dangerous consequences to our health and even to the organic farmers. As a matter of fact, exposure to chemicals and pesticides has been found to be the cause of either respiratory or mental deficiencies among many people. With organic coffee, we are not only ensuring our own health but even the health and well being of our organic farmers.

In addition, organic coffee is natural energy booster and relaxer which we can enjoy any time of the day. This is due to the fact that the caffeine from organic coffee comes in its purest form. It can even help us lose weight. The reason for this is that coffee satisfies hunger while toxins are being flushed out of the body simultaneously.

With the above mentioned health benefits of organic coffee, there is no doubt why we should choose it. We can even enjoy a daily cup of Joe without worrying about the harmful effects to our body. A USA Company that produces a great cup of organic coffee is www.BoreshaCoffee.com

It is easy to make an espresso. To make espresso, you will need to have a good Espresso Coffee Makers. There are many espresso machines in the market but not all of them are right espresso machines in the true sense of the word. A high-quality contemporary espresso machine must be able to make high pressures of at least 9BAR or atmospheres or 135 pounds per square inch pressure to push water through a very finely ground, compressed bed of coffee.

There are lots of cheaper espresso machines in the market that rely exclusively on steam pressure to push water through the ground coffee. Steam pressure can only produce 1.5BAR or 50 pounds per square inch pressure at best. At this level, it will not make the exact crema that a pump-driven or lever-operated espresso machine will produce. These machines are generally sold for under in chief department stores and frequently come with a 4-cup carafe. A steam-driven “espresso machine” will also give you excellent coffee when used properly, but will never give you a good espresso.

While espresso has more caffeine per unit volume of most beverages, compared on the basis of usual serving sizes, a 30 ml or 1 fluid ounce solo espresso has about half the caffeine of a standard 180ml or 6 fluid ounce cup of drip brewed coffee, which is anywhere from 80 to 130mg.

Our goal is to let you know how to make coffee and to help you explore coffee. Espresso is one of the most popular and lovable types of coffee. Hopefully this article helped you to know what actually espresso coffee is.

Brewing your own coffee at home rather buying it at a local coffee shop can be an effective way to save money. The problem with this technique for many people is that they find it inconvenient or difficult to make their own morning brew. For folks who have always purchased their daily coffee from Starbucks, it can be a difficult transition to go from what they consider the best to something they see as lower quality. In many cases, the coffee maker is to blame for the difficulties people deal with when making coffee at home. Choosing the right appliance can guarantee that you will be able to make delicious, satisfying coffee at home without any problems.

The first thing you need to decide when you are in the market for a new coffee maker is what size you will need. If you don’t drink a lot of coffee, just one or two cups per day, or if you only enjoy it on special occasions, then you should buy a small one or two cup machine. For those who drink coffee constantly, or if there are multiple coffee drinkers in the home, go with a larger machine.

Next, you will need to set a firm budget. Having a target price in mind can help to greatly narrow down the quantity of options available to you when you are shopping.

After you have decided on a size and budget, consider which options you want in your ideal machine. One main feature to think about is whether or not you want a fully automatic machine. Makers range from opulent models that can grind fresh beans, brew on a timer, and even change the strength of the brew, down to simple hand operated french presses.

Automatic makers can also be found with a wide array of different features. The features that you will need mostly depend on the type of coffee beverages you like to drink. For those who prefer to just drink plain brew, a traditional automatic drip machine is likely all that is needed. If you prefer elaborate espresso based beverages such as a latte, you will want to buy a coffee machine that comes with additional features such as amilk frother. The more attachments, features, and options you add to a machine the more expensive it will get, so be sure you go with only the features you will use often.

Finally, be sure to shop around to find the best price once you find the coffee maker that fits your needs. It can be beneficial to browse user reviews to find out which models real people actually like. If possible, pick a model that comes with a good manufacturer warranty just in case you ever have problems with the machine.

Finally, if you are looking for that perfect coffee experience at home, you might want to consider a Keurig single serving brewer. Keurig machines use single serving pods called k cups to brew the perfect cup of coffee every time.

With the fluctuation in the price of coffee, 2010 is filled with uncertainty for the suppliers and growers alike. On the commodity market the price of Robusta does fluctuate but with a low of .49 a pound in February to a high of .34 in April. The growers are wary of promised made to increase the price so they can sustain a decent living.

This all needs to be put into perspective. The low for Robusta coffee on price per pound for the past 10 years was in September of 2001 where was being sold for .26 a pound. Since that time the price has steadily climbed.

This climb reached a peak in March of 2008 when the price per pound was 2.44. This is six times greater than what is was just 7 years earlier. By the end of 2008 the price had dropped to .82 per pound and has slowly descended from there to the present price in the mid 70′s.

Brazil had a bad year when production is concerned for 2009, but with a good outlook this year, the price will stabilize or dip. There was some concern at the beginning of the year with production of Robusta out of Vietnam, but it has not caused to great of an impact on the market as of this 5th month of the year.

For the growers of Brazilian Naturals the outlook is much better. The price in April of 2010 was 6.89. This is an increase of 1.3% from March.

It is estimated that 122 million bags of coffee will be sold for 2010 of which 47 million will come from Brazil.

The exportation of coffee for the month of March 2010 was 8.8 million bags and the price has not gone up. For this year alone the production of coffee has decreased 9.6%, but with stable prices in the market, a drastic increase is not expected.

For those that know how to make coffee there is little worry about a dramatic increase for the rest of the year. As for the price of coffee, 2010 should not yield too many surprises.

This and many more great articles are posted and available on how to make coffee blog.
