Coffee farmer Jolan Lamoste painstakingly sorts sacks of first pick green coffee beans (GCB) for defects before selling them to Nestl, the makers of NESCAF. Lamoste has a good reputation to protect his father was a longtime supplier of Nestl. He not only inherited his parents' livelihood but also their sense of pride in delivering the best produce their lands can yield.

Lamoste, who hails from Laac, Compostela Valley, inherited the coffee growing business from his parents, Maximo and Gina. His parents, in fact, were given the honor of becoming ceremonial coffee farmer ambassadors in 2006, when the Nestl Satellite Buying Station in Davao City celebrated its 20th anniversary.

After 20 years of coffee farming and trading, Lamoste knows there is no shortcut to good, quality coffee. He always resists the temptation to quickly sell his dried and dehulled first harvest coffee to Nestl Satellite Buying Station in San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

This is why Jolan never fails to sort out all substandard coffee beans from his even if it means more hard work and a longer waiting time before he could get the income from his harvest.

Nestl Buying Stations have very high standards that are strictly implemented. My parents never dared sell substandard coffee beans and I dont either, says Lamoste.

Lamoste is helped in the sorting process by no less than by his mother Gina. Through a homemade plastic screen-and-wood frame contraption, they filter out the small, broken and immature beans out of the good ones. Their experienced hands also pick out the rest of the debris pebbles, corns, rice, etc.

After 20 years of coffee farming and trading, Lamoste knows there is no shortcut to good, quality coffee. Selling only the best coffee beans not only assures that only good coffee will be brewed and consumed, it also preserves my parents legacy and reputation, he explains.

Cadava, her husband and three children moved to Sitio Bagong Silang in Agusan province in 1998. At first, they planted rice and corn in their two-hectare farmland but the earnings they got from selling their produce were barely sufficient for their needs. The couple decided to grow coffee in hopes of earning extra income.

Eventually, Cadava's husband took up the training course at the Nestl Experimental and Demonstration Farm (NEDF), a non-profit teaching and training center based in Tagum City that offers free extensive coffee specialist training. The NEDF also sells coffee planting materials produced using Nestl technology at cost price.

Through the years, the Cadavas have been able to expand their farm to 15 hectares. In this farm, they harvest corn, coconuts and coffee.

Farming is all about nurturing and giving birth or fruition to life. It's a life-giving vocation. That's why the first pick is a reason to celebrate – it's a chance to give life and better opportunities to the family, the workers and the community, says Cadava in her native Cebuano.
