Information On The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is very important in the Ethiopian culture. The coffee ceremony will be performed when friends visit, during celebrations, or simply as a part of the daily routine. It is so important to how the Ethiopians view coffee that most Ethiopian restaurants will have the coffee ceremony performed for you at your table.

The Ethiopian coffee ritual takes the participants through the entire coffee preparation process. Whether you are witnessing the ritual in a restaurant or lucky enough to participate in someone’s home, the green coffee beans will be brought to your table by a woman. She will wash the beans, and then start a fire in a small open roasting furnace.

The washed beans will be put into a small pan with a long handle and held over the fire. The woman preparing the beans will shake the pan back and forth, like an old-fashioned popcorn maker. This keeps the bean from burning. Some people have described the sound of the shaking beans as similar to shaking coins in a tin can. Once the beans are roasted, the preparer takes the pan and walks around the room, filling the room with the enticing aroma of freshly roasted coffee. Experiencing the sounds and smells is an important part of the ritual.

The next step in the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is to grind the freshly roasted beans. In restaurants, they may use an electric grinder to speed up the process. Traditionally, the beans will be ground in a small tool called a mukecha (pronounced moo-key-cha). The mukecha is a very heavy wooden bowl. The beans are poured inside, and then crushed with a zenezena, which is a wooden or metal stick that is used in an up and down motion, rather like a mortar and pestle.

The ground coffee is then put into a traditional clay pot called a jebena (pronounced jay-ben-ah). Water is added, and then the pot is put over heat until the coffee boils. The scent of the boiling coffee again fills the room, tempting the senses of all the participants of the ritual.

Coffee prepared in the Ethiopian coffee ritual is then served in small ceramic cups resembling the small cups you see in Chinese restaurants for tea. The cups are arranged on a tray very close together, and the coffee is poured from one cup to another in a single pour from the pot. This is a very important step, even if some sloshes onto the tray. If the server poured each cup individually, the coffee grounds would get mixed up with the liquid, resulting in gritty coffee. With the single pour method, the coffee remains free of the sediment.

Once you’ve taken your first sip, you’ve witnessed the full life-cycle of making coffee, from washing the raw beans, through roasting, grinding, and boiling the coffee. If you’re in a restaurant, the ceremony usually ends here. Traditionally, second and third servings are often prepared as well. Each serving has its own name: the first serving is called Abol, the second serving is called Huletegna, and the third serving is called Bereka. Once you’ve reached this stage, you have completed the Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

If you are thinking of treating adults to something more different and enchanting, think of chocolate covered coffee beans. To come up with this specialty, the chocolate and the coffee bean have to blend perfectly to produce that favorite taste. These products are not suitable for young children because coffee contains caffeine. This could affect the kids by making them lose sleep and increase their activity. Roasted coffee beans have a bitter taste thus not a specialty for the children. Though when blended with chocolate, flavor changes due to the sweet taste of chocolate. One would choose varieties of quality beans in order to come up with best products of candies.

For all the guys who enjoy very strong coffee, the brand of sweets from espresso beans would do them much good. Due to their strong flavor within them, these high quality seeds store a lot of caffeine in them. Thus, one who consumes these kinds of sweets may find staying awake almost all night. Once the beans are roasted, you then immerse them in molten chocolate giving them that bittersweet taste towards the center of the candy. The chocolate enhances the taste by making it somehow tolerable and is quite fantastic for the lovers of great coffee. Other people like to have less strong coffee and the best choice would be from Costa Rica. Their high quality beans produce nice chocolate covered coffee beans with less caffeine thus one will have the chance to sleep well like a baby. Lastly, the other variety of candy has coffee beans with the most concentration of caffeine. This is particularly best for all who hate taking coffee in liquid form. These are also good if you are going for an outing.

Preparing the sweets is as simple as dipping the beans in chocolate after it has melted. Immediately, you will get the treat you wanted the only thing left is to store them well in air tight containers. Therefore, you see that once you purchase the best coffee seeds that you love, the next thing is just making your bonbon. If you choose to buy the ready made ones, then know that they also come in different of types of chocolate coating ranging from the dark, milk and the white. One has not run out of options and you will definitely get what appeases you.

With these kinds of sweets, one does not have to be in a festive mood to have them. You may use them as snacks when you need to revitalize your body ready for work. One may also use some of them as the last thing after dinner. The only thing you need to take care of is the brand of beans that you choose. If you wish to rest at night, do not go for the product that has lots of caffeine. Remember also not to give your children chocolate covered coffee bean. They are best for the grown-ups delights only. Try them and you have something to look forward to satisfy your desire.

It’s All About Health, Or Is It?

As I got involved in the coffee business I researched this beverage.  I wanted to be more educated so I could pass on this information to our coffee family.  I found myself asking this question, is it all about health?      I learned about the many ups and downs about coffee, which by the way, there seems to be many more ups, as far as health is concerned.  Also the importance of freshness, whole bean verses ground, water temperature, roasted the day of delivery, how to store it, cleaning your coffee pot properly and the list goes on.  All important information and we do include this on our Coffee Lovers USA website and more.  But for me and many others, I just plainly love the aroma that fills the room when a fresh pot is brewing.  The wonderful taste as I sample my first sip.      The variety of coffee beans from all around the world that deliver their own distinct flavor.  To me it’s close to walking into a home where fresh baked bread is just coming out of the oven.      Yes, I’m happy there are many health benefits surrounding our favorite brew, but what makes me a coffee drinker is the pleasure it brings in all the above mentioned areas.      Life can get pretty complicated at times and we can become very analytical.  So let’s take a break from the busyness, take a deep breath, put up a pot of our favorite brew. Don’t chug it, but sip it and enjoy the taste, the aroma and life will seem sweeter.  It’s not the destiny but the journey we need to enjoy.  Let every moment count.  Remember, “Any Time is Coffee Time.” God’s Peace be with you,
Joe Patanella

Where to purchase products to stock your vending machines

In 2008, Americans bought more than billion worth of vending products. No matter how you look at it, that’s a lot of snacks and drinks.

So where is the best place to purchase the products for your vending business? Before we examine that issue, make sure the products in the machine are what your customer wants. A simple survey letter on the front of each machine asking your customers what items they would like to see in the machine really helps a lot. Leave the surveys on the machine a few days and see what happens. When I’ve done this in the past, I’d usually get requests for beer and wine, but also helpful suggestions. There are a lot of regional brands that people like and the larger vending companies don’t have time to stock. Be different! Be unique! Learn from your customers!

Keep in mind that your existing accounts are the best source of new customers. This survey will generate goodwill for your business and lets your customers know that you care – it’s one personalized service you provide that the larger companies don’t.

Time to Go Shopping: The wholesale clubs – Sam’s, BJ’s and Costco – are generally the best places to buy snacks. They offer as few or as many snacks as you need, at reasonable prices. Check with some of your candy companies to see if they offer product rebates. And always make sure you buy the right size snacks to vend out of your machines. An easy way to find out is to pull an item out of the tray on a spiral snack machine; if the spiral comes out with the snack, the snack is too large.

The major drink manufacturers usually run sales on sodas from Memorial Day until Christmas. Scan newspapers for best prices and even clip coupons. Some of the smaller or independent grocery stores will let you buy large amounts of drinks at a great price at certain times of the year. The 1-to-2 cents you save per can is pure profit and adds to the bottom line.

For coin-operated coffee vending machines, you must buy product through a vending machine product distributor. These items are specially formulated for vending without binding up the machine with humidity. Vending-specific cups are important because they are made to dispense without jamming. Be very careful when buying a case of cups. Always keep the case standing upright so that you don’t flatten out the lip of the cup. If the lip flattens, the cup will jam and the customer will watch his coffee run down the drain.

Don’t be afraid to be different in what you stock, and make sure you charge a fair price for a quality product. These simple steps will help you keep your customers happy – which keeps ‘em coming back for more business.

Coffee Scents Can Alter Human Emotion and Behavior

If you have ever immediately become relaxed by smelling freshly cut grass or rejuvenated by smelling fresh peppermint, then you can attest to the fact that scents have the ability to alter human behavior and emotion. A new study has shown that the smell of coffee by itself has the ability to provide necessary antioxidant benefits, while also dramatically calming you.

Of course, we all rely upon a cup of Joe in the morning to wake us up and get us through the day, but simply smelling the great aroma of Java does have the ability to have affects on your behavior and emotion. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry did cite that smelling coffee provides pleasure and also powerful antioxidant properties. These antioxidant benefits work to protect the cells in your body from damage caused by stress. This is an important finding because drinking coffee has dramatic antioxidant benefits to neutralize free radicals within the body. However, now you can also use coffee aromas to prevent free radical damage that can cause premature aging and disease.

Within the study, adult rats were tested who were stressed out from sleep deprivation. The study was supposed to be able to show how coffee aromas influenced their brain functions and impacted their behaviors. After the test was complete, the results did show that the aromas of roasted coffee beans changed the protein levels in the brains of the rats. This also showed that smelling coffee aromas has the ability to enhance valuable proteins in the brain that provide healthy antioxidant benefits. This worked to protect the body’s cells from stress damage simply by sniffing coffee.

Interestingly enough, you can find this evidence in ancient medicinal practices. There were many bottles of aromatic medicines found in Egyptian tombs, and there were also writings from the ancient Romans, Greeks, and Chinese to provide evidence that they used the smell of specific aromas for healing purposes. One of the biggest industries growing within alternative medicine today is the practice of aromatherapy. This is a holistic method that uses botanical oils that are smelled or massaged into the skin. These oils will directly affect the nervous system and brain through the stimulation of the olfactory nerves within the body.

Truthfully, smell is one of the most complex of all our five senses, and it does directly affect behaviors and emotions when the body processes a scent. It also stimulates the portion of the brain that is responsible for short term memory, which would explain why you have specific emotions or memories when you smell the perfume that you used to wear in high school. Research is not complete on all of these subjects, but it is proven that if you do smell coffee, it has the ability to relax you and provide healthy antioxidant benefits to combat stress. I can think of nothing better than smelling and sipping a fresh cup of Joe to drink to your health!

Coffee franchises have taken over in small business today as we know it. Every corner in every major city has a coffee house, most of these coffee houses are linked through coffee franchises. 81% of Americans will have been in at least 5 different coffee franchises in their lifetime.2.5% of the stock market are cornered by such businesses like the basic coffee house. We the public has definitely benefited from large coffee franchises, as they have benefited from us.?

Small Business vs. Franchise

Each has its own benefit. A small business owner has a lower overhead. This is ideal for profit margins. A single coffee house owner can expect to have up to 4 employees, this would be ideal, and they can maintain business with this type of crew. The average pay that a single coffee house owner can expect to pay out per employee could be anywhere from .75 an hour -.50 an hour. Usually a small business owner of this type can afford to hire part-time employees, therefore saving oneself the added costs of health benefit.

Accidental insurance coverage for this low ratio will also be feasible. A coffee franchise has the benefit of name recognition. Everyone who is an avid coffee drinker has their favorite name brand coffee house. This makes availability for name product sales. There are big tax breaks for large coffee franchises. This also makes room for more revenue, and having more revenue allows for a large company to hire more part-time employees. Having more employees has the benefit of making more produc

ts, and being able to sustain a larger clientele.

To Each His Own

If you ask your 80 year old next door neighbor if he or she prefers a large coffee franchise cup of coffee or the local small business owner’s cup, you may find that they will likely support the local favorite, the small business owner. There is some loyalty to the small business men and women today. Now ask the same question to a college student, who has just enough time to run to the corner (very accessible) large coffee franchise, which cup they prefer, you will likely hear them say the convenient, trendy coffee franchise.

Not that the college student is less loyal, but maybe the new thing is a little more popular and a little more accessible. Now every one person must decide for themselves which is best for them, to support the larger business, or the smaller business. No matter which you choose, there will always be a new trend in java.

It is a pity that coffee does not get the credit and the attention it deserves. Coffee tends to get bad press and focus on negative effects of caffeine and we generally underestimate the importance of coffee in our life. Coffee is seen just as a drink, but it actually provides countless health benefits. Coffee may not be in the prescription by a physician. But nevertheless it plays a significant role in ensuring a healthy life for us.

People love coffee. They start their daily routine with a steaming cup of coffee in the early morning. But it is a question whether they really realize the benefits of coffee as a health drink. Coffee stops headache. It boosts your mood. These are the good things about coffee that all of us know. But there are more than what eyes meet in coffee matters.

• Research has shown that coffee minimizes the risk of diabetes.

• Believe it or not, coffee lowers the risk of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. People who drink coffee regularly are around 80% less likely to be affected by Parkinson’s disease than who do not take coffee at all.

• Regular drinking of coffee distances you from colon cancer. Daily two cups of coffee, the risk you may get colon cancer is reduced by 25%.

• Two cups of caffeinated coffee per day, liver cirrhosis risk is decreased by 80%.

• Moderate intake of coffee reduces the risk of developing gallstones.

• Coffee reduces the risk of early stage diabetes. Coffee improves insulin sensitivity and it reduces blood sugar levels. Research has shown that if you drink three cups of caffeinated coffee per day, diabetes risk is reduced by considerable amount. If you drink six cups of caffeinated coffee daily, risk of diabetes is reduced by a whopping 50%.

• Coffee may help ward off asthma. Coffee eases out the nasal passages and improves airflow.

• Coffee contains antioxidants that fight against viral infection. One cup of coffee contains more antioxidants than one cup of grape juice!

• Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and protocatechnic acid. These chemicals show excellent antibacterial effects.

• Caffeine present in coffee is a psychoactive substance. It improves one’s mood and enhances performance.

• Coffee reduces fatigue effectively and it is an active stimulant.

• Around 100 ml of coffee every hour you can stay all night awake. Coffee delays sleep and reduces sleep time.

• Coffee makes you more alert. If you drink coffee whole day you will be alert throughout the day.

• Coffee prevents formation of dental cavities.

But coffee has its downside as well. It is an addictive drink. People who drink coffee daily in the long run become an addict, not just to that smell and taste, but to the caffeine content. They can reach a state where seems impossible for them to function in life without a cup of their favorite coffee and its likable bitter taste. If you make drinking coffee a regular habit, it certainly presents you numerous benefits like improved mood, enhanced performance, and reduction of risks of a lot of diseases including cancer. But what if you cannot drink your coffee at the usual time you take it? You may suffer from a headache. Fatigue reaches you. You feel restless. Your mood becomes dull. Your performance gets affected. If you regularly consume a large amount of coffee and stop drinking it suddenly you may suffer the withdrawal symptoms of caffeine addiction. This results in more adverse effects. Your blood sugar level becomes imbalanced. Your blood pressure gets affected. You may become easily impatient and get easily stressed. If you find this happening to you it is advisable to reduce your regular coffee intake and ease yourself out of your strong caffeine addiction. Limiting your daily intake will reduce your dependence on caffeine.

Though coffee has its own list of health benefits, like anything else, it should be taken only in moderation. Too much coffee has its own downside. So drink your cup of coffee, but only in a moderate amount to ensure a healthy you.
