Coffee: The Bad And The Good Sides Of Drinking It

Posted on | January 1, 2011 | No Comments

A lot of people think of their coffee habit as an unhealthy indulgence. It is not surprising since it is the advantages of gulping coffee that always receive the magnification. Well, there are many of them and they could be alarming but if only everyone begins to see the ample goodness of coffee, they would not be too guilty sipping a cup or 2 of it every day. Having mentioned a cup or two, aren’t you tired of your old coffee machine’s regular servings of bland coffee? It’s time for the big switch Nespresso Citiz C110 Coffee Maker could be the one you need.

Mayo Clinic’s associate professor of the Preventive Medicine and Nutrition Donald Hensrud says that while the common presumption that coffee is harmful could be true, it is not always the case. The professor said that there are over 2,000 different chemical components in coffee actually and some of these components include the ever popular antioxidants. He quoted a study which found a connection between coffee consumption and reduced risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer And remembered to mention that in another study released recently, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia risks of development have been found to be lowered down by caffeine consumption. Coffee is abundant of caffeine.

Hensrud added that coffee can be a relief to some people suffering from migraines but he warned that coffee drinkers who habitually drink joe at work each day may suffer from withdrawal headaches should they failed to extend their habit on weekends. He also said that it is not a healthy idea to load up on sugar and cream as they contain loads of calories and fats. He specifically asked pregnant women and people suffering from anxiety and insomnia to be cautious with their coffee intake. Do not put up with the dull coffee your old coffee maker is always serving you. Have it changed now by Nespresso Citiz Single.

The goodness we can gain from coffee have been pointed out by Hensrud but it does not mean excessive drinkers of it are safe already because they are actually at risk of having bad breath, yellow stains on teeth, anxiety, jittery, insomnia and increased blood pressure to name a few. If you’ve ever heard of the saying too much of something is bad, that applies in coffee consumption so watch out how many cups of coffee you take inside your body. In search for a better coffee machine? Make Coffee Makers Guide as your reference point. You’ll find great coffee machine brands and deals at the site.

What Are the Health Effects of Drinking Coffee?

Many people simply do not drink caffeinated coffee because of their fear of negative health effects. The fact of the matter is that recent studies have shown that a moderate amount of coffee could actually benefit you by reducing your overall risk of some serious illnesses and diseases. Many people drink coffee simply because of it’s energizing effects which help keep you awake longer and feeling less groggy in the morning. If you are drinking too much coffee there are of course negative side effects that can come of it despite the positivity of these new studies. This article will look at some of the potential health effects drinking coffee could have on you.

It has been suggested that females who consume excessive amounts of coffee can suffer from infertility and sometimes have problems with birth. There are markedly more stillbirth deliveries inwomen who say they drank coffee throughout pregnancy. Your chances of miscarriages can also be significantly higher if you drink two or more cups per day. Too much coffee during pregnancy can also cause low birth weight. Switching to decaffeinated coffee may not offer a solution, as the chemicals present in the decaffeination process may still be present in trace amounts. Men get the added benefit of a reduced risk of developing gout by drinking coffee. Gout is a recurring condition that is commonly identified by symptoms such as painful swelling and inflammation of the joints – particularly in the foot or ankles. Gout is often considered a condition of the big toe but the truth is it can effect the ankles, legs, arms, and fingers as well. The impact is joints that are hot and tender and may be red or swollen. It’s thought that gout is caused by high levels of uric acid within the body, which is also linked to kidney stones. Research indicates that drinking coffee reduces the level of uric acid in the body.

It is a commonly held belief that caffeine raises the risk of high blood pressure but no formal studies have come to that conclusion. Because coffee is a stimulant, many people feel on edge or irritable after consuming too much coffee. If a susceptible person drinks too much coffee, it’s possible that the caffeine could decrease that person’s resistance to stress. This can make them feel more stressed and anxious about things that normally wouldn’t invoke those feelings. If a person is feeling under stress, symptoms such as an irregular heartbeat, increased heart rate or increased blood pressure may emerge. Those who drink too much coffee are especially susceptible.

Don’t forget that even though there are good benefits for drinking coffee there are plenty of negative effects to remain cautious about. Play it safe by drinking in moderation. You’ll be enjoying some of the recently discovered health benefits and avoiding some of the negative effects by moderating the amount you drink.

Drinking Coffee For A Better Life

Coffee, a drink cherished by many; a drink avoided by others. Tea, its main rival, seems to offer a bounty of better health benefits; a drink for the New Agers and those who want to escape the decadence of the brown, caffeinated drink. The fact stands that tea can only be as beneficial as its preparation, which in some cases may have as much sugar as a can of soda. To understand coffee, one must understand the core value of tea: that the brewed leaf itself is the only healthful component. Everything else is decadence.

To that, the coffee bean itself contains a number of benefits to health. But the culture of coffee, like the tao of tea, contains a lot of excess trimmings. Espresso machines, for example, produce a highly concentrated form of ordinary coffee. And then the all-consuming vice: sugar. Along with cream, sugar waters down the benefits of coffee, where it turns the brew into drinkable candy. But all of this remains unchanged from tea. The bean is the important part.

Caffeine can wreak havoc on the nervous system, but that does not make it synonymous with coffee. Different kinds of coffee (all prepared differently) will yield varied levels of caffeine content. Serving size also comes into play. To those sensitive to caffeine, the obvious alternative can be found in decaffeinated coffee. But such an alternative could downplay the positive affects of the drink. Coffee is rich in the B vitamin niacin; and in recent studies has been shown to have antioxidant-like effects on the body by eliminating free radicals. As a caution, these benefits only arise with a balanced drinking habit. Too much cream and sugar can prove to be detrimental, while too much coffee poses many long-term hazards. While coffee may provide the B vitamin niacin, it in turn restricts the body from other vitamins. And depending on the brew, coffee contains acids that have been linked to stomach ulcers. Symptoms like these may sound off-putting, but they exist only in the long run for an abusive drinker. A daily cup poses no threat to the average person.

And a cup can be prepared several ways. The standard method used by drip machines yield a good amount of caffeine and the filter traps out most of the volatile fatty acids in the bean. The use of a French press, with its lack of a filter, will keep the acids in the brew (though some claim it helps the coffee to taste better). The pressurized water in an espresso will not keep out most of the volatile acids, and it will also increase the caffeine content. All told, for those who refuse to switch to decaffeinated, instant coffee granules contain less caffeine and fatty acids. Compared to their quality cousins, instant coffee should satisfy the balanced drinker. This along with less cream and less sugar, can make for a risk-free casual cup of coffee.

Coffee is a very prized commodity in the market. This is a very famous drink anywhere in the world. Because of its popularity and also the frequency of it being consumed, there has been a lot of study conducted to find out whether this is beneficial or not to the body. The subject of coffee health benefits and risks has been greatly discussed worldwide. Here are some of the things many found out during their research.

Coffee indeed has a lot of benefits. It reduces the development of certain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and gout. However, risks are also involved with regards to coffee consumption. Here are some examples.

1. Consumption of coffee could lead to ulcers and gastritis. Experts advise that those already afflicted with these types of ailments stop or reduce the amount of coffee they consume to a minimum.

2. Coffee jitters are something most people associate with drinking coffee. This is what one acquires when they have too much of their share of coffee. It can also cause unexplained anxiety and irritability. It could also be the cause of not being able to sleep at night or insomnia.

3. Coffee has been found out to stain the teeth. If you don’t want your pearly whites to be damaged, stay away from too much coffee.

4. The bad cholesterol in the body tends to rise when drinking coffee. This would mean that cholesterol levels are being increased by caffeine. This study was done in 2007 by Baylor College of Medicine.

5. Many believe that drinking coffee could be a factor for high blood pressure. However, most studies to support or erase this belief have found no solid evidence to link blood pressure to coffee consumption. It may just simply be a myth.

6. A Danish study done in 2003 has linked heavy consumption of coffee during pregnancy to an increase risk of stillbirths. They found out that if a pregnant woman drinks 7 cups of coffee per day, they are 220% more at risk of having stillbirths. No follow-up study has been conducted because of ethical issues coming from the threat of exposing mothers to increased coffee consumptions and resulting to dead babies.

These are just some of coffee health benefits and risks. It would be for you to decide which you think is true.

Like many topics and issues in the health and weight loss industry I believe drinking coffee for health and weight loss has been left unsettled with a growing controversy every day. People having all kinds of views whether bias or unbiased, has really made this topic difficult to come to a conclusion. So from all my research, studying, and experimenting I believe I have been able to come up with the unbiased truth on the topic drinking coffee for health and weight loss.

I would like to start off and put to rest some myths you might of heard that just seem to be used against coffee that have been proven wrong. So let me just quickly clear up these myths.

First, the caffeine in coffee does not increase the risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver injury, pancreatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, breast cancer incidence, or certain types of cancers. The truth is coffee actually decreases the risks or has absolutely no effect on these health conditions when coffee consumption is taken in moderation.

Second, the argument that declares coffee as a drug because of its drug like qualities like addiction, a stimulant, and mood altering. These things can become a problem without moderation a discipline but coffee being one of the healthiest beverages out there, I would rather have people drinking coffee than soda pops or sugar drinks.

Third, an excess of coffee increases urinary secretion of important minerals such as magnesium, potassium and sodium and uses up a fair amount of vitamin B1. These minerals and vitamins are very important to our body’s health but that is why I like to bring up several tests that have been conducted which should clarify a few things. These test proved that people that drink coffee consume an average of 8 to 14% more minerals and vitamins than people that don’t drink coffee. I don’t know if coffee drinkers eat healthier or what but there mineral and vitamin loss is made up by consumption of food and daily multi-vitamins.

These myths have had an impact on the questions and controversy against coffee being benefial or not for healthy living and weight loss. I must point out that anything in excess is bad for you so when people say coffee is unhealthy, I can most of the time point out ten unhealthier things they do instead of drinking coffee.

Now that we are pasted that, let us focus on the advantages and disadvantages of coffee.

Advantages:

Coffee is actually one of the healthiest beverages billions of people consume regularly.

Coffee containing with bitter orange, hydroxycitric acid, and chromium can encourage an increase up to 30% in metabolic rate.

Coffee with exercise when taking 300mg averages a 20% increase in energy and fatigue while burning fat increased 107% greater than without caffeine.

Caffeine in coffee keeps our brains alert and receptive of new information.

Regular consumption of coffee decreases the risk of type II diabetes and many other health risks.

Disadvantages:

Coffee when consumed in excess can be addictive, stimulate, and a mood charger.

A large amount of coffee or caffeine consumed all at once can have a negative affect on blood sugar levels that influences fat burning that could change into storing fat.

Too much coffee over time can stain your teeth.

With so many benefits of coffee for health and weight loss it is hard to be worried about the few disadvantages when moderation can solve it all.

Step 1 Coffee Clean Up

Coffee when consumed straight and by itself it perfect. Having zero calories, zero carbs, and zero fats one can see that it would not hinder weight loss. When adding all that extra sugars, sweeteners, syrups, alcohol and so on just make it a high calorie dessert.

Sticking with regular or straight shots of coffee with limiting extras like milk and sweeteners is necessary for achieving healthy living and weight loss.

Step 2 – Coffee in Moderation

Too much coffee at one time can affect blood sugar levels so the easy fix is reducing your in take at one time. Spacing out your coffee in take throughout the day would be something to consider and would benefit as an appetite suppressant while reducing chances of increasing blood sugar.

Reducing your coffee in take might be a struggle and can possibly cause headaches and constipation but in the end is worth it.

Step 3 Limit Simple Carbs with Coffee

Avoiding or at least limiting simple carbs while drinking coffee would be wise as coffee can affect blood sugar negatively and adding simple carbs will just encourage an insulin spike.

Step 4 – Exercise

Exercise has so many benefits besides burning calories and suppressing your appetite. Exercise can also help regulate your body’s use of insulin to keep blood sugar down and making coffee have little affect on your body. So make sure you participate in aerobic activities, lift some weights, and keep drinking that coffee and you should achieve weight loss in no time.

Don’t let people tell you coffee is a bad drug and should be avoided at all costs. You know the truth that coffee actually has more benefits than negatives, so enjoy your coffee worry free about hindering for diet and weight loss goals.

Have a great day and God bless!

People have been drinking coffee in one form or another for hundreds of years. During those hundreds of years there has been debate after debate about whether or not it causes health problems. The simple truth is that there is no simple answer to the question.

Coffee has both pros and cons and these should be taken into consideration. For many people starting the day off without a cup of coffee would not even be an option. Many of these same people will drink multiple cups of coffee throughout the morning and some will continue throughout the day. These are the people who should look at both sides of the coin and then decide how much coffee they should drink.

Good Coffee

As any morning coffee drinker will attest, coffee is an excellent pick-me-up. Practically everyone knows that is true. However, what many people don’t realize is that coffee does have other good qualities. Some of those good qualities are actually health boosters, such as:

Research has shown that coffee may help reduce the risk of diabetes, particularly early stage diabetes. Coffee has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels and improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin. Some researchers say that 6 cups per day can reduce the risk of diabetes by fifty percent.

Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease both have been shown to be effected by coffee. People who drink coffee on a regular basis have an eighty percent less chance of having these diseases affect their body than non-coffee drinkers.

The risk of colon cancer is reduced by twenty –five percent by drinking just two cups of coffee per day. This may be due in part to coffee aiding in bowel functions.

Other health concerns that have been shown to be positively affected by coffee include: cirrhosis of the liver risk decreases by eighty percent and the chance of having gallstones is decreased as well.

Coffee contains many chemicals that are antibacterial and also contains more antioxidants than a cup of grape juice. The antioxidants help to fight infection and the chemicals found in coffee have antibacterial effects.

In addition, coffee has been shown to help prevent dental cavities and to be helpful to asthma patients. The latter is possibly due to the hot beverage opening up the passageways for breathing.

Bad Coffee

All of the good side effects do not mean that there are not some bad side effects. Coffee is addictive. People who drink coffee daily become addicted to the caffeine. The body becomes accustomed to having caffeine and when it does not it reacts in the form of headaches, depression-like moods, and imbalanced blood sugars.

Coffee can also slow the metabolic system down which makes it harder to maintain weight. There are some people who argue that coffee keeps them from eating, while this may be true, it is also true that metabolism slows down which stops weight loss.

Bottom of the Cup

The bottom of the cup, so to speak, is that just like anything else, coffee consumption should be in moderation. Coffee doesn’t have to be banned but it should be monitored and not over–indulged in.

It is a pity that coffee does not get the credit and the attention it deserves. Coffee tends to get bad press and focus on negative effects of caffeine and we generally underestimate the importance of coffee in our life. Coffee is seen just as a drink, but it actually provides countless health benefits. Coffee may not be in the prescription by a physician. But nevertheless it plays a significant role in ensuring a healthy life for us.

People love coffee. They start their daily routine with a steaming cup of coffee in the early morning. But it is a question whether they really realize the benefits of coffee as a health drink. Coffee stops headache. It boosts your mood. These are the good things about coffee that all of us know. But there are more than what eyes meet in coffee matters.

• Research has shown that coffee minimizes the risk of diabetes.

• Believe it or not, coffee lowers the risk of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. People who drink coffee regularly are around 80% less likely to be affected by Parkinson’s disease than who do not take coffee at all.

• Regular drinking of coffee distances you from colon cancer. Daily two cups of coffee, the risk you may get colon cancer is reduced by 25%.

• Two cups of caffeinated coffee per day, liver cirrhosis risk is decreased by 80%.

• Moderate intake of coffee reduces the risk of developing gallstones.

• Coffee reduces the risk of early stage diabetes. Coffee improves insulin sensitivity and it reduces blood sugar levels. Research has shown that if you drink three cups of caffeinated coffee per day, diabetes risk is reduced by considerable amount. If you drink six cups of caffeinated coffee daily, risk of diabetes is reduced by a whopping 50%.

• Coffee may help ward off asthma. Coffee eases out the nasal passages and improves airflow.

• Coffee contains antioxidants that fight against viral infection. One cup of coffee contains more antioxidants than one cup of grape juice!

• Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and protocatechnic acid. These chemicals show excellent antibacterial effects.

• Caffeine present in coffee is a psychoactive substance. It improves one’s mood and enhances performance.

• Coffee reduces fatigue effectively and it is an active stimulant.

• Around 100 ml of coffee every hour you can stay all night awake. Coffee delays sleep and reduces sleep time.

• Coffee makes you more alert. If you drink coffee whole day you will be alert throughout the day.

• Coffee prevents formation of dental cavities.

But coffee has its downside as well. It is an addictive drink. People who drink coffee daily in the long run become an addict, not just to that smell and taste, but to the caffeine content. They can reach a state where seems impossible for them to function in life without a cup of their favorite coffee and its likable bitter taste. If you make drinking coffee a regular habit, it certainly presents you numerous benefits like improved mood, enhanced performance, and reduction of risks of a lot of diseases including cancer. But what if you cannot drink your coffee at the usual time you take it? You may suffer from a headache. Fatigue reaches you. You feel restless. Your mood becomes dull. Your performance gets affected. If you regularly consume a large amount of coffee and stop drinking it suddenly you may suffer the withdrawal symptoms of caffeine addiction. This results in more adverse effects. Your blood sugar level becomes imbalanced. Your blood pressure gets affected. You may become easily impatient and get easily stressed. If you find this happening to you it is advisable to reduce your regular coffee intake and ease yourself out of your strong caffeine addiction. Limiting your daily intake will reduce your dependence on caffeine.

Though coffee has its own list of health benefits, like anything else, it should be taken only in moderation. Too much coffee has its own downside. So drink your cup of coffee, but only in a moderate amount to ensure a healthy you.

For most people, the day will not start right without a cup of strong hot coffee. In fact, the day does not start without the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans in the percolator, simmering and brewing to make that drink that will give you just enough adrenalin to jumpstart your day. But how does one achieve it at home? It is always cheaper to roast your own beans at home instead of jumping in the car and dashing to the nearest coffee shop. You usually get yourself a designer coffee which you could have made in the comforts of your own kitchen. Below are the steps in achieving fresh roasted beans at home.

First of all, pick the type of unroasted beans that you like from the market or from your local coffee shop. A pound of it can cost you roughly around – depending on the brand and quality of the coffee bean. The better the quality, the more expensive the coffee will be. After you have made your choice, it is now time to start the roasting process. Remember that to perfect roasted beans you must be very meticulous with the process. When roasting, learn to listen to the beans.

The way the beans crackle under the grinder or roaster will be very important as your roasting process proceeds. The first few cracks will go on for a couple of minutes and then start to taper. The longer you let the beans keep on roasting and cracking, the darker they become. You do not want to keep them long in this state however in order for their quality not to be ruined. Listen for the doneness of the cracking of your beans very closely so you achieve the fresh roasted flavor that you are looking for.

Another good indicator of roasted beans would be its color. When roasting your beans, do make sure to also check for the color it turns to. During the first few minutes and the first signs of cracklings of your coffee beans, they will turn a light shade of yellow. As time passes and the second phase of cracklings begin, the coffee beans turn a dark shade of brown and oil is released.

Do not let the beans stay too long in the roaster so that you are able to achieve fresh roasted beans. Listening and checking the color of your beans at the same time will greatly help you in getting the results that you want. If this will be your first time to roast your beans, it may take some practice but you will surely get the hang of it after some time.

Do monitor your roasting so that the next time that you plan to roast your own coffee beans again, you know which style works best. Remember that for each type of coffee bean, the roasting process is also different. What may work best for one coffee bean may not necessarily work the same for the other coffee bean. To keep it more organized, try to keep a roasting logbook for each coffee bean that you plan to try.
