Americans Say Thanks to GIs Deployed in Iraq & Afghanistan by Ordering Up 125,000 'Cups of Joe'

Larkspur, CA (PRWEB) April 27, 2010

Green Beans Coffee Co. has delivered more than 125,000 cups of fresh-brewed coffee to armed services personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan thanks to the generosity of thousands of Americans who have participated in the companys Cup of Joe for a Joe program, launched early last year.

Virtually all of Green Beans Coffees 70+ cafes are located on American military bases in seven countries, including the U.S., and more than half are in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many are situated on forward operating bases, places of extreme danger and where there are few amenities for the troops.

Under the Cup of Joe program — or COJ as the troops call it — anyone with two dollars to spare can buy a cup of super premium coffee for a GI deployed on or near a U.S. Military base in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). What makes this program especially rewarding is the ability for the purchaser to send a personal note of thanks with the gift of a coffee drink. As a result, troops taking their breaks at the nearest Green Beans Cafe get recharged not only with a cup of fresh-brewed coffee but also by expressions of appreciation for their service and sacrifice from caring supporters. Many GIs express their gratitude in return emails, which have led to ongoing pen pal correspondence in some cases. A portion of their email letters are posted on the companys website http://www.greenbeanscoffee.com and Facebook pages http://www.facebook.com/cupofjoeforajoe.

The expressions of thanks in both directions are heartwarming and often poignant, said Jason Araghi, the companys Co-Founder. Its been particularly gratifying to see how such a small gesture has meant so much not only to the servicemen and women, but to the givers as well.

From Kirkuk, Iraq, a soldier wrote: Trust me, its not insignificant. Its a big morale booster to receive something like this, you dont even realize. Thank you for supporting your soldiers.

Another, in Baghdad, thanked the giver for their support and understanding. As simple as it seems, a cup of coffee and a nice note go a very long way to making it a little less hard to be so far away from our homes and families.

And from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, a GI wrote last summer; I can tell you that nothing brings joy to my day like an espresso chai latte on ice from Green Beans. Thank you for your generosity.

A Simple Three-Step Process

Buying and receiving a COJ is a simple, three step process that begins on the Companys website http://www.greenbeanscoffee.com/coj

The buyer first indicates how many cups of coffee they want to send to the troops. A gift of one cup of coffee costs $2 while a round of JOEs for thirty soldiers costs $60. Of course, givers can write in any other amount.

Then, if they would like the COJ to be delivered with a personal note, they enter a message of thanks and encouragement and indicate if they would like their email address displayed so that the GI can respond. Billing details are the third and final step.

Its just as easy for the troops to participate. To receive a COJ, servicemen and women can sign up for the program on the Green Beans website or in a cafe on their base. Within hours, they will receive an email from Green Beans Coffee letting them know that a COJ is waiting for them at the Cafe. Once they acknowledge this email though a provided link, the coffee is then ready to be picked up. If the giver has included a personal note with their return email, the GI will see it at that time and be able to respond with their own note of thanks.

Going Green By Choosing Organic Coffee

Nowadays, we have all been interested in all things organic. From the food we eat to the ingredients in our toiletries and makeup, organic products have become our option for healthy living. And for this very same reason, organic coffee has been introduced to the public.

But what is organic coffee? What makes it different from regular coffee? What will we get when we choose organic over regular coffee?

First of all, organic coffee is still coffee but has been grown according to the organic farming techniques and standards. This means that no artificial fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides were used in growing this specific high quality coffee. Such methods that were used in cultivating organic coffee include building healthy soil through terracing, composting, and even inter-cropping. At the same time, organic farmers make use of biological pest control and are moving towards a goal of sustainability for the water, soil, and ecosystem which they use.

There are three main factors which benefit from organic coffee. The first person who benefits from this is us, the consumers. Even if it isn’t coffee we buy, as long as it’s organic, we are choosing the best ingredients already. And when we drink organic coffee, we can guarantee that no chemicals or synthetics have been used. It also helps that we have made a good decision that helps the environment and our social surroundings.

The farmers also get a benefit once organic coffee is bought as they can use the money to produce a new batch again. But the biggest benefit goes to our environment, as organic farming supports the long term availability of the supply of water and soil. It also helps the earth by not using those harmful chemicals and pesticides. Now, even those who are avid coffee drinkers can enjoy their cup of Joe without worrying they are putting their health and the environment in danger.

Boresha Coffee is a USA Company bringing quality organic coffee to the United States. They have certified USDA Organic and OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association) processes and are even “Fair Trade Certified”.

Information On The Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is very important in the Ethiopian culture. The coffee ceremony will be performed when friends visit, during celebrations, or simply as a part of the daily routine. It is so important to how the Ethiopians view coffee that most Ethiopian restaurants will have the coffee ceremony performed for you at your table.

The Ethiopian coffee ritual takes the participants through the entire coffee preparation process. Whether you are witnessing the ritual in a restaurant or lucky enough to participate in someone’s home, the green coffee beans will be brought to your table by a woman. She will wash the beans, and then start a fire in a small open roasting furnace.

The washed beans will be put into a small pan with a long handle and held over the fire. The woman preparing the beans will shake the pan back and forth, like an old-fashioned popcorn maker. This keeps the bean from burning. Some people have described the sound of the shaking beans as similar to shaking coins in a tin can. Once the beans are roasted, the preparer takes the pan and walks around the room, filling the room with the enticing aroma of freshly roasted coffee. Experiencing the sounds and smells is an important part of the ritual.

The next step in the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is to grind the freshly roasted beans. In restaurants, they may use an electric grinder to speed up the process. Traditionally, the beans will be ground in a small tool called a mukecha (pronounced moo-key-cha). The mukecha is a very heavy wooden bowl. The beans are poured inside, and then crushed with a zenezena, which is a wooden or metal stick that is used in an up and down motion, rather like a mortar and pestle.

The ground coffee is then put into a traditional clay pot called a jebena (pronounced jay-ben-ah). Water is added, and then the pot is put over heat until the coffee boils. The scent of the boiling coffee again fills the room, tempting the senses of all the participants of the ritual.

Coffee prepared in the Ethiopian coffee ritual is then served in small ceramic cups resembling the small cups you see in Chinese restaurants for tea. The cups are arranged on a tray very close together, and the coffee is poured from one cup to another in a single pour from the pot. This is a very important step, even if some sloshes onto the tray. If the server poured each cup individually, the coffee grounds would get mixed up with the liquid, resulting in gritty coffee. With the single pour method, the coffee remains free of the sediment.

Once you’ve taken your first sip, you’ve witnessed the full life-cycle of making coffee, from washing the raw beans, through roasting, grinding, and boiling the coffee. If you’re in a restaurant, the ceremony usually ends here. Traditionally, second and third servings are often prepared as well. Each serving has its own name: the first serving is called Abol, the second serving is called Huletegna, and the third serving is called Bereka. Once you’ve reached this stage, you have completed the Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

All You Want To Know About Your Grandfather’s Coffee

When I was six years old, my granddaddy would take me and my twin brother to work with him. Granddaddy worked at night as a security guard, so it was no trouble at all for him to let us go to work with him. And it was just the three of us, so needless-to-say, my granddaddy let us go nut! And I’m sure we drove him nuts, as well.

We had the best granddaddy in the world, just as long as we didn’t tell mom, he would let us swear, we could talk about sex, or anything else that we wanted to talk about, and the one thing that mom would have went crazy if she knew that he let us, DRINK COFFEE!

That started a fire that still burns today. My granddaddy introduced me to the greatest drink ever. And still every time I take a drink of coffee, I think about those special times. But, back then, I drank coffee because grown-ups drank it and mom would not let us drink it because it wasn’t good for us. I drink for different reasons, now. It really isn’t as bad for you as you think.

I’ve done a lot of research on coffee, and drinking it is not as bad
for you, at all, much to my surprise.

what would you say if I told you there was a natural elixir that could lower your risk of diabetes, colon cancer, or Parkinson’s disease? you would think I was crazy, right? Its true.

Researchers from Harvard University followed data on more than 126,000 people for 18 years, and what they found would surprise the heck out of you. The research found that drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes by single digits. But, drinking six or more cups of coffee per day slashed men’s risks by 54%  and more than 30% in women. The more coffee you drink, the better it is for you.

Here’s something else that you may not know. In males, drinking sperm stronger. The studies show that coffee consumption makes sperm swim faster and swim a longer distance. Coffee has actually been linked with infertility. This is a misconception.

Here are a few more points that I’ve found very interesting for you to read. Like both black and green tea, coffee contains antioxidants, which can help the cell mutation which may lead to cancer.

Surprisingly- given that coffee may be a migraine trigger- the caffeine may cure headaches. It is one of the ingredients in some pills because it increases the power of aspirin and other painkillers by as much as 40%.

Coffee consumption is also a brain stimulant. As coffee is a stimulant, it can help in concentration. Last year Dr Chiara Trombetti, of the humanities Gavazzeni institute in Italy, went as far as suggesting that a morning cup of milky coffee can get sleepy school children off to a good start. However, that is unlikely to be echoed by nutritionists here, who recommended sufficient sleep and good diet as better ways to cope with the mental demands of the brain.

Coffee even promotes liver health! Though doctors cannot explain the link, but studies have shown that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop liver disease, including Cirrhosis of the liver.

Coffee consumption even decreases the need for surgery on gallstones. Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones. In one study, women who drank four cups of coffee each day were 25% less likely to need surgery for gallstones than women who weren’t coffee drinkers.

Coffee consumption may actually be good for the skin. Caffeine appeared to improve micro-circulation when applied to the skin in one study, making cellulite look better.

Now, I’m sure my Granddaddy didn’t take all this information into consideration when he chose to be a coffee drinker. In fact I know he didn’t, he chose coffee because he liked it, but he’s almost 90 years old now, and I would like to think that his excessive coffee consumption had a little to do with him still being around, but in any case, I’m still glad he is.

As always, I hope you found this article both informative and entertaining. Thank you for reading, and may GOD bless you always, and in always.

Coffee May Help Risk With Heart Rhythm Problems

A new study shows that drinking coffee in moderation can actually help prevent serious problems and hospitalization caused by irregular heart beat.

One of the researchers of this study has reported that people who drink 4 or more cups of coffee each day had nearly an 18 percent less chance of being hospitalized from problems stemming from heart rhythm problems.

The details of the study were released in San Francisco at the American Heart Associations 50th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention on March 5, 2010.

According to Kaiser Permanente, which did the research, although it has been established that very large doses of caffeine can lead to rhythm problems, there has been little research about the amount of coffee people drink.

A previous study in Denmark showed no difference in atrial fibrillation between people who were heavy coffee drinkers with those who were light drinkers.

But this study by Kaiser Permanente shows that when looking at a large group of people, the heavy coffee drinkers were least likely to end up in the hospital from heart rhythm problems.

The results of the study seem to go against common advice for people who experience heart palpitations. Usually doctors recommend patients such as this actually decrease their coffee intake because it is believed that the caffeine actually increases the irregular heart rhythms.

However, these data might be reassuring to people who drink moderate amounts of coffee that their habit is not likely to cause a major rhythm disturbance, said study researcher Arthur L. Klatsky, MD, senior consultant in cardiology at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California on the health care company’s website.

The study does not provide enough evidence to actually say that people should drink caffeine, or coffee to prevent these heart problems, he clarified, but it does show that people who have rhythm problems do not necessarily need to stop drinking coffee.

The study was done on 130,000 recipients of Kaiser Permanente health insurance. It looked at data during routine physicals from 1978 to 1985 that patients provided regarding their coffee, alcohol and smoking habits. Klatsky said that the group of people was actually studied until 2008.

The results of the study showed that people with irregular heartbeats who drank at least four cups a day had an 18 percent less chance of ending up in the hospital for heart rhythm issues.

Those who drank up to 3 cups a day saw a 7 percent reduced risk.

The study did not determine a reason as to why drinking more coffee actually reduces this risk.

A doctor who reviewed the findings for the WebMD website said the results seem to reflect what heart specialists have seen with their own patients.

Sumeet S. Chugh, MD, associate director of the Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles told WebMD that the study reaffirms that doctors dont think coffee actually generates arrthymias (irregular heartbeat).

However, he said, if you already have arrthymia, the study doesnt show how coffee will affect you, so the best idea is to cut back on your caffeine and see if it goes away.

Introudction To Gourmet Coffee

The word Gourmet is used to refer to the fancier grade, cut, or quality of many of the foods and beverages we consume. Gourmet foods and drinks have long been associated as the regular fare for the rich and famous who can afford the higher pricing that often accompanies many of these finer food and beverage versions. Coffee is a beverage that has been available in cheap, regular and gourmet versions for a long time and the consumption rate of coffee among people from around the world continues to increase every year. Gourmet coffee may have once only been served in the finest dining establishments and found being served mostly in the homes of the upper class, but gourmet coffee is widely available and affordable to a variety of people and is found in a variety of settings today.

Coffee is made from coffee beans which are found within the berries that develop and ripen on a number of smaller evergreen bush plant species known as the Coffea plant. After ripening, coffee berries are harvested, and then undergo a processing which also includes drying them. It is the coffee beans that remain after the processing and drying of the coffee berries. The beans are then roasted to various degrees which cause them to change physically and in the tastes they produce. Finally, the coffee beans are grinded down into a fine consistency that is commonly known as coffee grounds, and packaged and shipped to destinations around the world where consumers can buy and brew coffee grounds to make coffee in commercial, hospitality, institutional, and residential settings. Some people prefer to grind their own coffee beans before brewing them for coffee. Packaged coffee beans that have not been ground can be purchased in stores and ground using the grinding mills that are made available in most of the stores selling them, but also with grinding machines in the home.

The two most commercially grown species of the coffea plant that produce the coffee beans used to make the coffee that the world’s population consumes, are Robusta and Arabica. Gourmet coffee is made from the top tier coffee beans from the arabica coffea plant. These top tier arabica coffea plants are typically grown at very high altitudes (above 3000ft) with ideal soil and climate conditions. The coffee beans produced have fuller flavors, are more aromatic, and have less caffeine in them than other varieties of coffee beans such as Robustas. The coffee beans of arabica coffea plants grown at lower altitudes are still noted among consumers as having richer flavors than the flavors produced by Robusta coffee beans, but it is only the top tier arabica coffee beans that are considered to be Gourmet, and thereby from which gourmet coffee is derived.

Coffee bean grounds and coffee beans that have not been grinded down need to be stored in air-tight containers and kept cool in order to protect them from losing their flavor. The containers that coffee is typically sold in are not the most ideal for storing coffee for a long period of time. When you arrive home after purchasing coffee grounds at the store, consider transferring the fresh coffee grounds to appropriate storage containers to extend its shelf life and full flavor.

Coffee can be brewed in many ways such as boiling, pressuring, and steeping. Most of us brew our coffee using automatic coffee brewing machines and percolators which use gravity to pull hot water through coffee grounds where the hot water mixed with the oils and essences of the coffee grounds empties into a liquid holding container below. Filters are used to keep coffee granules from being emptied into the carafe or liquid holding container from which the brewed coffee can then be served from because most people do not want to drink the coffee granules. Coffee granules can be very bitter once the flavor able oils and essences have been removed through the brewing process. Plants and flowers love coffee grounds though for anybody who is looking for a greener alternative of what to do with coffee grounds after brewing instead of just throwing them in the trash.

Of course, Gourmet coffee beans are only the beginning to creating a truly gourmet coffee experience for many gourmet coffee drinkers. Some people are quite content with drinking their gourmet coffee black, without adding anything like milk, creamer, sugar or other sweeteners or flavorings, to their coffee. While many others want to enhance their gourmet coffee and drinking experience with tasty additions like milk that is whipped into a froth, sweeteners, and mixing in other flavors like chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and mint, to name just a few. Big name coffee chains sell a wide variety of gourmet coffee with different tasty additions and flavors to appeal to gourmet coffee lovers. However, brewing gourmet coffee at home is usually much cheaper, and you can add what you want to your coffee to satisfy your refined, gourmet tastes.
